or: Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy endures forever.

Apolytikion.

From Menaion - - -

Mode 2.

Magnificent are the accomplishments of faith! The holy Martyr Theodore greatly rejoiced as he stood in the fountain of fire as if beside the still waters. He was consumed by fire and offered like sweet bread to the Trinity. At his entreaties, O Christ God, save our souls. [SD]

Glory. Repeat.

Both now. Theotokion.

From Octoechos - - -

Mode 2.

You are supremely glorified, O Virgin Theotokos; we sing your praise. For by means of your Son's crucifixion has Hades been overthrown and death itself has died. We have risen, who once were dead, and have been made worthy of life. We received the original enjoyment of Paradise. And therefore with thanksgiving we send up glory to Christ our God because He is powerful and alone very merciful. [SD]

The appointed Kathisma of the Psalter may be read, i.e. Kathisma 10. It would be followed by the short litany.

DEACON

Again and again, in peace, let us pray to the Lord.

(Lord, have mercy.)

Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and protect us, O God, by Your grace.

(Lord, have mercy.)

Commemorating our most holy, pure, blessed, and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, with all the saints, let us commend ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.

(To You, O Lord.)

PRIEST

For Yours is the dominion, and Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages.

(Amen.)

For the Cross.

Mode 3.

A Cross was fixed on earth and touched the heavens, not that the tree reached the heights, but you, who were on it, filled the universe. Lord, glory to you! [EL]

Verse: Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at the footstool of His feet; for He is holy.

You were lifted up, Lamb of God, on cypress, pine and cedar, that you might save those who worship in faith your voluntary Cruci-fixion. Christ our God, glory to you! [EL]

Glory. Both now. Stavrotheotokion.

Having gained the Cross of your Son, O Mother of God, as a rod of power, with it we shall cast down the ramparts of the foes as with love we ceaselessly magnify you. [EL]

The appointed Kathisma of the Psalter may be read, i.e. Kathisma 11. There is no litany, but immediately the following:

Kathisma II.

For the Cross.

Mode 3.

You were struck with blows for the sake of the human race and were not enraged; free our life from corruption, Lord, and save us. [EL]

Verse: God is our King before the ages; He worked salvation in the midst of the earth.

Mode 3. N/M (Seeing how beautiful.)

The armies of the Angels are amazed as they contemplate your measureless authority and your voluntary Crucifixion: How is He who cannot be looked at scourged in the flesh? He wishes to de-liver human nature from corruption, and so we cry out to you, Giver of life: Glory, O Christ, to your compassion! [EL]

Glory. Both now. Stavrotheotokion.

Mode 3. N/M (Seeing how beautiful.)

Your pure Mother who knew not wedlock, seeing you hanging dead upon the Tree, mourned as a mother and said, 'Is this how the lawless and ungrateful people of the Hebrews, who had the benefit of your many and great gifts, have repaid you, my Son? I hymn your divine condescension.' [EL]

From Octoechos - - -

Kathisma III.

For the Cross.

Mode 3. N/M (Seeing how beautiful.)

Dishonoured you endured the Cross, O Master beyond all creation, that you might honour me, of old dreadfully dishonoured; with a lance you were pierced in your side, O Longsuffering, as you wished to ransom me, your fashioning, from corruption. I hymn your great compassion and your goodness, O Lover of humankind. [EL]

Verse: God is wondrous in His saints.

For the Martyrs.

Mode 3. N/M (Seeing how beautiful.)

Armoured with the panoply of Christ and clothed with the weapons of the Faith you stoutly cast down the battle lines of the foe; for eagerly, in hope of life, you endured all the threats and scourges of the tyrants; and so you have received the crowns, valiant Martyrs of Christ. [EL]

Glory. Both now. Stavrotheotokion.

Mode 3. N/M (Seeing how beautiful.)

As your Mother, the pure and all blameless Virgin who knew not wedlock, saw you nailed to the Tree, O Master, she cried aloud to you, 'Alas, my sweetest Son, how has a lawless people condemned you, the Maker and Master of all, to the tree? I hymn your supreme goodness. [EL]

READER

Lord, have mercy. (3)

Glory. Both now.

Psalm 50 (51).

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. [SAAS]

Once you had taken the Faith of Christ into your heart like a suit of armor, you trampled the hostile forces underfoot, having contended much, and you were crowned with heavenly laurels forever, as one invincible. [SD]

Oikos.

We gladly in faith extol You, who are carried on a throne of light. For You have given us a divine gift, Theodore, who was brave in the contests and thrice-blessed in his life, as being a champion of the truth. Having a pious frame of mind, he obtained You, O Christ; and against the deceiver he proved to be a mighty victor, as one invincible. [SD]
