Only begotten Son and Logos of God, being immortal, You condescended for our salvation to take flesh from the holy Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary and, without change, became man. Antiphon III.

Mode 3.

Verse 1: This is the day the Lord made; let us greatly rejoice and be glad therein. [SAAS]

Resurrectional Apolytikion.

Mode 3.

Let the heavens sing for joy, and let everything on earth be glad. For with His Arm the Lord has worked power. He trampled death under foot by means of death; and He became the firstborn from the dead. From the maw of Hades He delivered us; and He granted the world His great mercy. [SD]

Verse 2: Let heaven and earth praise Him. [SAAS]

Let the heavens sing for joy, and let everything on earth be glad. For with His Arm the Lord has worked power. He trampled death under foot by means of death; and He became the firstborn from the dead. From the maw of Hades He delivered us; and He granted the world His great mercy. [SD]

An optional alternative to the Antiphons are the Typika (Psalms 102 and 145), and the Beatitudes with the appointed troparia, which are provided here.

The Beatitudes.

Mode 3.

In Your kingdom. Remember us, O Lord, when You come in Your kingdom. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Resurrectional.

From Octoechos - - -

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. [RSV]

When our primal father Adam disobeyed Your divine command, O Christ, You expelled him from Paradise. But when the faithful Robber while on the cross confessed You to be Lord, You restored him there, as he cried to You: "O Savior, when You come in Your kingdom, remember me." [SD]

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. [RSV]

When in Paradise we sinned, You condemned us and pronounced the curse of death, being the Lord and the Giver of life. But later, loving Master, You who are sinless suffered in the flesh, and You brought the dead back to life again, who shouted: "When You come in Your kingdom, remember us." [SD]

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. [RSV]

Having risen from the dead, You also raised us from the passions, by Your holy resurrection, O Christ our God. And roundly You defeated death's dominion over us, O Lord. Therefore we believers cry out to You: O Savior, when You come in Your kingdom, remember us. [SD]

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [RSV]

After three days in the tomb, as God, You gave life to the dead who were in Hades and also resurrected them. And being good, You welled forth the gift of incorruption to us all, who in faith cry out now unceasingly: O Savior, when You come in Your kingdom, remember us. [SD]

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

When You had risen from the dead, You appeared first to the myrrh-bearing women, and You spoke to them and said, "Rejoice." You sent them, Lord, proclaiming Your resurrection to Your friends, O Christ. Therefore we believers cry out to You: O Savior, when You come in Your kingdom, remember us. [SD]

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. [RSV]

Prophet Moses on the hill of old extended his hands and thus prefigured the Cross, defeating Amalek. And now with faith we take up the mighty weapon of the precious Cross, and defeat the demons, and cry aloud: "O Savior, when You come in Your kingdom, remember us." [SD]

Glory.

O believers, let us all extol the Father and the Son and the all-holy Spirit, the single God, as from one Sun, the one Lord. For thrice-resplendent is the Trinity, which illumines all who cry out in faith: "O Lord, when You come in Your kingdom, remember us." [SD]

Both now. Theotokion.

Rejoice, the gate of God, through whom went the incarnate Creator, when He was born from you, and He kept you sealed. Rejoice, O swift and light cloud who brings the divine showers, namely Christ. Rejoice, O ladder to heaven and celestial throne. O rejoice, holy mountain, uncut and rich. [SD]

Mode 1. Automelon.

As a citizen of the desert and an angel incarnate * and a wonder-worker you shone forth, O Afxentios, our God-bearing father. * Since you received the spiritual gifts * by fasting and vigilance and prayer, * you can cure those who are ailing and heal the souls * of those who run to you with faith. * Glory to Him who gave His might to you; * glory to Him who placed a crown on you; * glory to Him who operates through you, providing cures to all. Sing praises to God; sing praises; sing praises to our King; sing praises. [SAAS]

Verse: Oh, clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with the voice of rejoicing. [SAAS]

The reading is from Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians.

2 Cor. 6:16-18; 7:1

Brethren, you are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty." Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God. [RSV]

Alleluia. Mode 3. Psalm 30.

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Verse 1: In You, O Lord, I hope; may I not be ashamed forever. [SAAS]

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

The Gospel

Seventeenth Sunday of Matthew

The reading is from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.

Mt. 15:21-28

At that time, Jesus went to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon." But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, "Send her away, for she is crying after us." He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." And he answered, "It is not fair to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table." Then Jesus answered her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire." And her daughter was healed instantly. [RSV]

Hymn to the Theotokos.

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos. [GOA]

Communion Hymn. Psalm 148.

Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the highest. Alleluia. [SAAS]

Hymn after Holy Communion.

Mode 2.

We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us. [GOA]
