Amen. Lord, have mercy. (12)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Come, let us worship and bow down before God our King.

Come, let us worship and bow down before Christ God our King.

Come, let us worship and bow down before Him, Christ our King and God.

Psalm 50 (51).

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. [SAAS]

If the Lity was not sung at Vespers, sing the following:

Let us sing in praise of devout St. Athanasios, that never-setting luminary of the whole world. In the firmament of the Faith, he shone brighter than the sun, and by his beacon signals, he guided believers everywhere towards virtue. On the one hand, there were his God-inspired teachings and saving words of instruction, which he let flow from his lips like inexhaustible torrents; and on the other hand, there were his amazing deeds, and his angelic life-style, by which he appealed to others to be zealous. He demonstrated both, life-style and brilliant speech, in a godly manner, as the expert trainer that he was. We pray You, O Christ our God: At his entreaties protect Your flock, and reinforce the Orthodox Faith, in Your love for humanity. [SD]

He loved Christ intensely; he was named for immortality; he was a genuine mystic of the Savior, and the pride and joy of all monastics, as well as their leader and guide; he was consecrated to the Lord from infancy. O choirs of Fathers, let us join together and extol St. Athanasios. When he conceived the love for God in himself, he left behind the deceptiveness of the world, and he took up the yoke of Christ on his shoulders. Bravely he put to flight the hoards of the demons, and he showed us in action the excellent race for divine love. He ran this very race himself, and he speedily attained the true light of the omnific Trinity. Ponder this exciting wonder and this phenomenon worthy of God: He was earthen in nature, and yet he became equal to the noetic beings. He has received glory and immense honor from God. And now he intercedes on our behalf, that we might obtain the eternal blessings on Judgment Day. [SD]

Angels were astounded, humans were amazed, by the extraordinary feats of your ascetic life. For you were almost like one without flesh, even in your earthen body, and thus you wrestled with the invisible enemies. And now all generations of pious believers sing your praises, and especially your venerable flock, at that spectacular monument of your labors. You established it like a charming city in the wilderness, and you made it a reputable residence for countless monks. Your marvelous accomplishments and your brave contests adorn your monastery like expensive clothing. And your flock ever invokes your intercessions, O Athanasios, and your prayers for its protection by Christ, who have the great mercy. [SD]

Glory.

Let us sound the trumpet with the clarion of song. For the grace of the Spirit, more sonorous than any trumpet, summons all to extol the God-bearing Father. Let the kings and princes marvel at the genuine servant of the King of all, at the man who in the full armor of the Spirit defeated the principalities and powers of the ruler of this world. O Shepherds and Teachers, let us extol the rule and model of expert pastoring, He was pure in doctrine, brave regarding the Faith. He was sublime in contemplation, and he soared in the active life. His teachings flowed like a river of delight. He was a guide for the wayward, a support for the unsteady, and very sympathetic towards all who were infirm. And in extolling him, as the great glory of Athos, let us all say to him, "Fellow of the holy fathers, O Athanasios, ever lead us, your spiritual family, as our Father, and save your flock, by your supplications" [SD]

Both now.

Let us sound the trumpet with the clarion of song. For inclining from on high, the Queen of all and Virgin Mother crowns with her blessings those who extol her. Let the kings and princes run to gather together, and with hymns applaud her, the Queen who bore the King who, in His love for humanity, was well pleased to release those who were formerly prisoners of death. O Shepherds and Teachers, let us come together and praise the surpassingly pure Mother of the Good Shepherd. Let us praise her, for she is the golden lamp-stand, the light-bearing cloud, the one who is wider than the heavens, the animate Ark, the fiery throne of the Master, the golden urn holding the Manna, the gate of the Logos, which is closed shut. With songs inspired by God, let us extol her, as the shelter for all Christians. And in lauding her, let us say to her, "O Palace of the Logos, account us worthy, lowly that we be, of the Kingdom of heaven; for nothing is impossible, by your mediation." [SD]

Mode 3. Seeing how beautiful.

Angelic hosts on high were filled with wonderment, seeing your life in the flesh: how with your body you courageously went out to wrestle with invisible foes; and to the demonic hordes you inflicted serious wounds. Therefore, Athanasios, you received from the Master Christ, a wealth of gifts. Holy Father, intercede on our behalf with Christ our God, to save our souls. [SD]

Lord, have mercy. (40)

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Greater in honor than the Cherubim, and in glory greater beyond compare than the Seraphim; you without corruption gave birth to God the Word, and are truly Theotokos. You do we magnify.

In the name of the Lord, Father, bless!
