About the Velon Scores
John C. Velon, of blessed memory, transcribed or adapted over 10,000 hymns of the Greek Orthodox Church from the Byzantine to Western staff notation. He worked tirelessly over a period of about 25 years. His goal was to make these transcriptions available to those who had limited experience with Byzantine notation, and yet were pressed into and desired to chant for the church community. The National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians sponsored the conversion of Mr. Velon’s hand-written manuscripts into an electronic format. The work has had a presence on the internet for several years at stgeorgepublishing.org and has been widely accepted and used worldwide. With their blessing and that of the Velon family, the collected works of John C. Velon have now been made available to the AGES project so that these hymns can be presented side-by-side with their English counterparts.
